Beef Melons

Although the resemblance to watermelons is undeniable, melon is somewhat of a misnomer. Beef melons are large round fleshy growths that are used as an area to store excess protein by the carnivorous wild beef plant of central and western Salenheim. The outside of these growths is covered with a thick green skin the inside however is red flesh very similar to uncooked meat. Beef melons serve as a staple food stuff from much of Salenheim the melons are cut up and cooked like stakes, beef plants are farmed on mass in the wilkinsvale shire area for their melons.

Cheese fungi

Cheese fungi which is known just as ‘cheese’ in Salenheim is the flesh of a species of huge underground fungus that grows deep into the earth in parts of central Salenheim and especially in both of Salenheim’s deserts. The fungus cannot be eaten fresh as the fungus contains many toxins so mines must be set up to dig down and find underground deposits of aged cheese known as cheese veins. Cheese becomes edible 50 years after the plant dies but dose not become tasty till almost 200 years, the older the cheese the stronger the flavor, due to the lack of air underground the cheese dose not decompose quickly but 2000 years after the fungi dies the cheeses is no longer good to eat.

Grain

Many grain crops are grown in Salenheim much like other parts of the world, the most common are wheat, barley and rice. Wheat and barley are grown in central Salenheim and rice in the warm swampy areas to the north of shyst.

Seafood

The bounties of the sea are reaped from salenhime’s coast and traded throughout the land normally salted to be preserved or transported alive in tanks. Dangerous and prized seafood such as the giant squid are found in the waters off Welgan in the south west.

Salt:

Sodium chloride is an important agent in both flavoring food and preserving meat for transportation. The only large deposits of Salt in Salenheim are in the lesser Salenheimian desert as such there is a large industry mining salt in the desert and transporting it out before distribution to other parts of the land.

Game meat:

Animals are hunted for food all over Salenheim but the greatest game is found in the Southern Salenheim Forests and Fragehorne Forest. The great Wild bores and deer are hunted in the south and the tender white meat of deadly giant spider is sought after in Fragehorne Forest.
