The great General Ostumus remains one of Salenheim’s most remembered and hallowed figures, even after thousands of years since his death in 2E43.

Biography

The General was born as the squire of a lord in southern Salenheim, close to the city of Reurin, in the turmoil-filled years surrounding the end of the First Empire. At the age of fourteen, he, then known as Arnte Ost, was removed from his family by a raiding party of warriors from Shlarrg. This period in his history is known only from the General’s diaries, which, though prolific and detailed, have been disputed, however, his records tell us that he was held in a tower jail in Proll, the capital of Shlarrg, until he was able to form an army of Salenheimian and renegade Bogshlarrgs. With this makeshift army, he escaped into the Shlarrgian wilderness and they survived for three months, fighting a guerrilla war against the Shlarrgs of the area. He himself, while under siege from the major Shlarrg army, escaped the area, using his troops, supplemented with more freed prisoners, ran well over 100km to Reurin, spurring the depleted legion garrisoned there to assist in the fight. Ost led the legion through the wilderness again, arriving just in time to massacre the Shlarrg army, a setback from which would take years for them to recover.
After these acts of heroism, Ost was made the first general under Emperor ???, and the youngest General ever to serve in the Salenheimian army, at age 17. He was redubbed Ostumus, under the current naming systems of the day, and undertook a year-long pilgrimage for Konrad and Ynsertu, living by his wits in the far south. After this, he returned to service, and Ostumus succeeded many great acts of valour and generalship while in service, including the liberation of Salenheimian prisoners trapped in foreign lands, invasions and border pushing within the Bogshlarrg states, and securing of resources for generations to come. His death came suddenly in 2E43, as he attempted to cross the sandy plains of what is now the Greater Salenheim Desert, then owned by nomads similar to those of the Northern Continent. His legion suffered terrible attrition from the climate and landscape, as well as harrowing guerrilla attacks from the nomads. Ostumus finally died alone of exposure, struggling onwards through the sands.
