Herganbergan is a fortified town located in Northern
Salenheim. Founded in 1E72 by General Olaf Herganbergan of the Fifth Legion the town was always intended to be a military fortress to defend Northern
Salenheim (and the notable cities of Porttown and Tiagaranth) from the people of the newly discovered continent in the far North. Despite the huge military presence Herganbergan soon prospered and became a town in its own right. This was mainly due to the booming trade in shellfish and whale products from the sea surrounding the peninsula.
Population
Herganbergan's population can be divided into three distinct groups the first of which and by far the most powerful is the NSPMF or Northern
Salenheim Military Force. In general one legion (5000 men) is stationed at the fortress in Herganbergan at all times. During times of potential conflict this is often increased to 2 legions whilst in times of outright war with the people of the north this can be increased to up to five (2 legions in the fort and town and 3 others througout the province). As well as the legions Herganbergan holds a small navy base but because of the hostility of the terrain and oceans in the area the main fleet cannot be stationed there.
The second group located in Herganbergan are the economic class. Made up mostly of sailors, fishermen of various kinds (including whalers) and traders this class has developed over time and is the reason for Herganbergan becoming more than a military colony. The seas around Herganbergan are treacherous but bountiful, it is known equally for its strong currents as its valuable shellfish and whales. Many of the economic class of Herganbergan are ex-soldiers who do not wish to return original homes to the south.
The third group to live within Herganbergan are the refugees, immigrants and captives from the Northern Continent. During times of war the number of these increases. These foreigners are often regarded with suspicion by the military forces whilst mostly respected by the traders. The foreigners usually work as dock workers, labourers and oarsmen on the ships.
Culture
With its military and foreign origins Herganbergan is almost entirely void of High Salenheimian Culture. In its place lies a mixture of foreign influences and south Salenheimian military tradition inherited from the legions on station. Music is of an islander variety.
Trade
Herganbergan's main exports are slaves, whale, shellfish and fish. A small number of pearls are also known to be found from the sea in the area. Herganbergan requires many imports from the heartland provinces. Most notably these consist of iron for weapons, soldiers to use these weapons and grains for both food and ale.
Religion
Being relatively close the holy city of Tiagaranth the main god worshipped in Herganbergan and throughout the Northern
Salenheim Province is Tiagaranth. Due to the importance of fish (and other seafood) in the local economy
Tristan is worshipped by some as well as the occasional prayer to
Nathaniel for smooth sailing. Within the military
Konrad is occasionally worshipped by many soldiers. Many foreign deities are also worshipped throughout Herganbergan.
